{"id":1306,"date":"2018-11-24T05:28:57","date_gmt":"2018-11-23T20:28:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/luvenglish101.com\/?p=1306"},"modified":"2018-11-24T05:30:14","modified_gmt":"2018-11-23T20:30:14","slug":"public-transportation-in-japan-canada-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/luvenglish101.com\/en\/cultural-difference\/public-transportation-in-japan-canada-us\/","title":{"rendered":"Public Transportation in Japan (Tokyo) vs Canada (Toronto) vs U.S. (New York)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Public Transportation is very different\u00a0among these three countries I have lived. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Each has pros and cons, so let&#8217;s look at differences in <strong>Convenience<\/strong>, <strong>Punctuality<\/strong>, <strong>Cleanness<\/strong>, <strong>Busyness<\/strong>, <strong>Usability<\/strong>, and <strong>Cost<\/strong> from my experience.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"su-heading su-heading-style-default su-heading-align-left\" id=\"\" style=\"font-size:14px;margin-bottom:20px\"><div class=\"su-heading-inner\"><strong>Convenience<\/strong><\/div><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">I only know Toronto, Canada; New York, U.S.; and Tokyo, Japan; but here is\u00a0the number of train\/subway lines in each city.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #339966;\">Toronto, Canada<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 <strong>4<\/strong> subway lines with <strong>75<\/strong> stations<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>New York, U.S.<\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 <strong>27<\/strong> subway lines with <strong>472<\/strong> stations<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><strong>Tokyo, Japan<\/strong><\/span> &#8211; <strong>83<\/strong> subway &amp; train lines with <strong>658<\/strong> stations<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Yes, you can go anywhere by train or subway in Japan, especially in Tokyo. The map looks like this:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1316 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/luvenglish101.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/tokyo_train_map-1-1024x638.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"730\" height=\"455\" srcset=\"http:\/\/luvenglish101.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/tokyo_train_map-1.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/luvenglish101.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/tokyo_train_map-1-300x187.jpg 300w, http:\/\/luvenglish101.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/tokyo_train_map-1-768x479.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">I know it looks\u00a0crazy, but it is so easy for you to walk around the city without driving.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">When I lived in Toronto, I always used subway and bus or streetcar to get to my destination. It is almost impossible to do so only by subway or train since there are only 4 lines in Toronto. Luckily, I lived 10\u00a0minutes away from the\u00a0subway station, so it wasn&#8217;t that bad.\u00a0In New York,\u00a0you can\u00a0go almost everywhere by subway, so it is just like Tokyo. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">So <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">for <strong>Convenience<\/strong>, I would say <strong><span style=\"color: #ff00ff; text-decoration: underline;\">Tokyo<\/span><\/strong> and <span style=\"color: #3366ff; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>New York<\/strong><\/span> are the winners, followed by <span style=\"color: #339966; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Toronto<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"su-heading su-heading-style-default su-heading-align-left\" id=\"\" style=\"font-size:14px;margin-bottom:20px\"><div class=\"su-heading-inner\"><strong>Punctuality<\/strong><\/div><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; text-decoration: underline;\">There is an obvious winner in this category. Of course, it&#8217;s <strong><span style=\"color: #ff00ff; text-decoration: underline;\">Tokyo<\/span><\/strong>!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">I remember<span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong> TTC (Toronto Transportation Committee)<\/strong><\/span> has timetable with the first and last train times and says &#8220;every 2-3 minutes during rush hours and every 4-5 minutes outside rush hours&#8221; or something like that. But of course it usually comes more than 5 minutes after the previous train. Since I lived close to workplace, I didn&#8217;t have that bad experience while I was in Toronto, but a lot of people were complaining about <span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>TTC<\/strong><\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority)<\/strong><\/span> has a little bit more detailed timetable than <span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>TTC<\/strong><\/span>, but after certain period of times, they also say &#8220;every 10 minutes until&#8230;&#8221; There are more lines in Manhattan, so of course, depending on the line, schedule is very different. I&#8217;m from Japan, so I found that <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>MTA<\/strong><\/span> is very easy to use since each line is color-coded.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">So, how about <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><strong>Tokyo<\/strong><\/span> timetables? You can see the exact time when the train comes on the timetable. And what&#8217;s more, they most definitely come on time. It might be difficult to get used to Japanese transportation system, but once you know how to use travel planner tool which is available even in English version, it won&#8217;t be as hard as it looks.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"su-heading su-heading-style-default su-heading-align-left\" id=\"\" style=\"font-size:14px;margin-bottom:20px\"><div class=\"su-heading-inner\"><strong>Cleanness<\/strong><\/div><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; text-decoration: underline;\">This has another obvious winner&#8230;. <span style=\"color: #ff00ff; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Tokyo<\/strong><\/span>, of course!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">People who have been to Japan always say how clean Japan is. This is one of the things I miss about Japan. But actually, the area where I currently live (Norfolk, VA) is pretty clean everywhere I go, so I&#8217;m very happy. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>TTC<\/strong><\/span> used to be very dirty, but during the last year of my stay, they launched new models for subway, so it got a little bit\u00a0better. Of course, it got dirty soon again though.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>MTA<\/strong><\/span> could be the worst when it comes to cleanness. It just smells so bad and is very dirty. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"su-heading su-heading-style-default su-heading-align-left\" id=\"\" style=\"font-size:14px;margin-bottom:20px\"><div class=\"su-heading-inner\"><strong>Busyness<\/strong><\/div><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">You might have seen some videos of train staff pushing passengers into the train in <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><strong>Tokyo<\/strong><\/span>. Yes, that is real and it feels awful when you&#8217;re one of the passengers being pushed. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">When I went to <span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Toronto<\/strong><\/span> for the first time, I was so surprised that nobody was running or rushing into the train! When the train is at the station and you&#8217;re just got to the platform, most Canadians let the train go and wait for the next one even if the next one might not come on time. On the other hand, Japanese people run to catch the train in front of you even if the next one is coming in a few minutes on time.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>New York<\/strong><\/span> can get as busy as <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><strong>Tokyo<\/strong><\/span>, but you never see station staff pushing passengers. You don&#8217;t see a lot of people running towards the train either.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">So <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">for <strong>Busyness<\/strong> category, <span style=\"color: #339966; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Toronto<\/strong><\/span> is the winner, then <strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff; text-decoration: underline;\">New York<\/span><\/strong>, followed by <span style=\"color: #ff00ff; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Tokyo<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"su-heading su-heading-style-default su-heading-align-left\" id=\"\" style=\"font-size:14px;margin-bottom:20px\"><div class=\"su-heading-inner\"><strong>Usability<\/strong><\/div><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">I would say <span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Toronto<\/strong><\/span> has the simplest system among the three countries with unique monthly subway\/bus\/streetcar pass called Metropass which is plastic and easy to swipe.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>MTA<\/strong><\/span> has simple system but just as busy as <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><strong>Tokyo<\/strong><\/span>. Its monthly pass, Metrocard, is paper and hard to swipe.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><strong>Tokyo<\/strong><\/span> has the most complex system but coolest train\/subway card with IC chip. You don&#8217;t have to insert or swipe the card. You just need to wave it over the reader. You can use the train\/subway\u00a0card at so many different stores just like you use your credit card. I&#8217;ve never tried, but I heard that you can even use your cellphone as train\/subway\/credit card in Japan.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; text-decoration: underline;\">It is difficult to compare in <strong>Usability<\/strong>, but if you focus on how user-friendly the system is, I would say <span style=\"color: #339966; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Toronto<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0is the winner, then <span style=\"color: #3366ff; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>New York<\/strong><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, followed by <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff00ff; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Tokyo<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"su-heading su-heading-style-default su-heading-align-left\" id=\"\" style=\"font-size:14px;margin-bottom:20px\"><div class=\"su-heading-inner\"><strong>Cost<\/strong><\/div><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Fare for subway and train in <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><strong>Tokyo<\/strong><\/span> is based on distance unlike <span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>TTC<\/strong><\/span> or <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>MTA<\/strong><\/span>. So the longer you travel, the more it costs.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">In <span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Toronto<\/strong><\/span> or <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>New York<\/strong><\/span>, it doesn&#8217;t matter how far you travel. You just need to pay a certain amount of fare and that&#8217;s it. For that reason, you pay fare when you get on the train or subway, while you pay when you get off in <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><strong>Tokyo<\/strong><\/span> because they have to calculate how far you traveled.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; text-decoration: underline;\">For <strong>Cost<\/strong> category, I would say <span style=\"color: #339966; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Toronto<\/strong><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #3366ff; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>New York<\/strong><\/span> are the winners, followed by <span style=\"color: #ff00ff; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Tokyo<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"su-divider su-divider-style-default\" style=\"margin:15px 0;border-width:3px;border-color:#2619b1\"><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">As I said earlier, each has pros and cons, so if you want to get to the destination on time, for example, <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><strong>Tokyo<\/strong><\/span> has the best system for that. If you want more cost efficient way to travel around, <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>New York<\/strong><\/span> or <span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Toronto<\/strong><\/span> has better system. If you are germophobic, you should visit <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><strong>Tokyo<\/strong><\/span>.
